TW 312 members are amongst the growing number of people to realise just how inefficient wind turbines are. There are over 3,00o turbines built across the UK and the British Wind Energy Association recommends wind farm companies to base their planning applications on an output capacity figure of 30%. In 2007, less than one- third of Scottish wind farms achieved this figure.
During the winters of 2009-10 and already in 2010-11 we have seen high pressure sitting over most of the UK will little wind blowing. Temperatures regularly dipped below freezing and when the demand for electricity was at it's highest there was little production from wind power. Some days output was less than 50MW which according to Community Windpower's figures for their Mayfield proposal, would only power approximately 25,000 homes.
